Ireland's
first wastewater design-build-operate contract. Since October
1999, Black & Veatch subsidiary Paterson Candy Ltd. (now Black & Veatch
Contracting - Europe) has been working
on the design and construction of the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment
Works - the largest wastewater treatment contract in the history of
the Irish state and the first to be awarded on a design-build-operate
basis. The new works will be on the site of the existing works at Ringsend,
and with a whole-life value of IR£200 million, the project will
provide Dublin with wastewater treatment to serve a population equivalent
of nearly 1.7 million.
The plant will accommodate flows and loads relating to the year 2020
design horizon, with a full flow to treatment of 11.1m3/sec and an average
biological oxygen demand load of 98,400 kg/d. The plant also includes
Lamella plate settlement technology, sequential batch reactor technology
and UV disinfection. In addition, Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Technology,
an innovative design feature, will maximize the recoverable energy potential
of the sludge.
The
project is being implemented by the ABA Consortium: Anglian Water, Black
& Veatch, and Irish construction firm Ascon Ltd. Black & Veatch's
Paterson Candy Ltd. is heavily involved in the design, procurement,
installation and commissioning of the process, mechanical and electrical
plant and equipment while Anglian Water will be responsible for the
operation of both existing works and the new works once completed.
