Kentucky Lock - Grand Rivers, Kentucky
Black
& Veatch has provided studies and designs for multiple features
of the new lock at the Kentucky Dam. The new lock is 110 feet by 1,200
feet and is being constructed on hard limestone adjacent to the existing
100-foot by 600-foot chamber.
The lock is being designed according to a combination of criteria from
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Tasks performed include:
- Phase I Design Documentation Report for upstream end of lock structure
including a design loading criteria report, and soil structure interaction
analysis (for earthquake loads).
- Preliminary and final design and construction phase assistance of
the upstream cofferdam.
- Blasting study to assess rock excavation and blasting effects on
adjacent structures including lock, power plant, substation and switchyard,
transmission towers and other miscellaneous structures.
- Secondary cutoff wall evaluation for a second line of protection
against loss of lake pool.
