Gasification/IGCC Projects

Coffeyville Gasification PlantCoffeyville Gasification Plant and IGCC Projects

The Coffeyville Coke Gasification to Ammonia Plant gasifies 1,100 tons-per-day of petroleum coke to produce 75 MMSCFD of hydrogen, which is then converted to 1,100 TPD of ammonia. The combination of one of the two gasifiers normally operating and the other on hot standby has produced ammonia at an annual capacity factor of 92 percent, demonstrating the advantage of gasification for production of ammonia in the United States from low-cost feedstock as an alternative to high-cost natural gas.

Under a lump-sum EPC contract, Black & Veatch’s role included:

  • Front End Engineering Development (FEED).
  • Conceptual Design.
  • Detailed Design.
  • Cost and Scheduling.
  • Procurement.
  • Construction.
  • Startup Support.

Sarlux Gasification/IGCC ProjectSarlux Gasification/IGCC Project

Black & Veatch served as the Independent Engineer for the Sarlux IGCC project – the world’s largest operating IGCC facility – located in Sardinia, Italy. Currently, the company is providing operations monitoring services for the lending banks of the project.

The 551 MW net plant uses three GE Frame 9E combustion turbines with triple-pressure heat recovery steam generators, supplemental duct firing, and a steam generator.

Lake Charles Cogeneration Gasification/IGCC Project

Black & Veatch is providing owner’s engineering services to Lake Charles Cogeneration LLC for a 6,000-tons-per-day petroleum coke gasification project that will produce and provide hydrogen, steam, and electricity to an adjacent petroleum refinery.

The facility’s power configuration is expected to include two trains of combustion turbines, HRSGs, and steam turbines for a total of approximately 600 MW. Excess power will be sold to the local grid when the project comes on line in 2008.
