Dayton Power & Light Company and Black & Veatch Announce Alliance for Air Quality Improvement ProjectsProjects will use advanced technology to remove sulfur dioxide and oxides of mercury at Killen and Stuart coal-fired generating stations Dayton, Ohio (May 3, 2005) – Dayton Power & Light Company (DP&L) and Black & Veatch Corporation today announced that they have formed an alliance to execute the next series of DP&L air quality improvement projects. These projects will remove sulfur dioxide and oxides of mercury at DP&L’s Killen and Stuart coal-fired generating stations, which consist of five (5) nominal 600 megawatt units. The new air quality systems will go into operation at the five units between mid-2007 and mid-2009. The air quality projects will utilize the CT-121 scrubber technology licensed by Black & Veatch from Chiyoda Corporation of Japan. The advanced technology CT-121 flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process has demonstrated a sulfur dioxide removal efficiency rate as high as 99 percent. CT-121 has been proven to deliver consistently high performance and reliability rates at low operating costs in FGD plants worldwide. Additionally DP&L and Black & Veatch will convert the four Stuart units to balanced draft for a safer boiler environment, and will add barge unloading and loading for FGD reagent and byproduct. The scrubber byproduct will be high-quality salable gypsum. The new projects follow DP&L and Black & Veatch’s successful completion in June 2004 of a five-year project that installed selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units at Killen and Stuart. The SCR projects met all cost, schedule and performance targets, allowing DP&L to lower nitrous oxide emissions while serving the energy needs of the community.
