Black & Veatch Names UMKC's Gilliland to Board of DirectorsUniversity Chancellor brings engineering background, management expertise Overland Park, Kan. (Sept. 29, 2004) – Black & Veatch Corporation, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company, today announced that Martha W. Gilliland, Chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), has been named to its board of directors. Gilliland, who has been the UMKC Chancellor since 2000, holds a doctorate in environmental engineering/systems ecology from the University of Florida. She has held engineering faculty positions at the University of Arizona, Tulane University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Len Rodman, Chairman, President and CEO of Black & Veatch, cited Gilliland’s background as well as her “devotion to innovation” in announcing the appointment. “Dr. Gilliland’s education in engineering and leadership in education will bring a great combination of qualities and service to our board of directors,” said Rodman. “Her devotion to innovation will set a standard we will be proud to achieve. I know I speak for the entire board when I express my enthusiasm and gratitude in anticipation of her service to Black & Veatch.” Gilliland said she looks forward to her service on the board as a “stimulating” learning experience. “Black & Veatch is a global leader in helping business and governments solve some of the most challenging problems in engineering and management,” Gilliland said. “In my role as CEO of a major urban university, I can certainly relate to the company’s mission of Building a World of Difference. I’m delighted to have the assignment and look forward to my service on the board.” Gilliland, a resident of Kansas City, Mo., received a White House appointment in 2001 to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, where she currently serves on the Subcommittees on Energy Efficiency and on Federal Research/Technology Transfer. She is a board member of the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute, Inc. (KCALSI) and the Midwest Research Institute. She is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS) and the American Water Resources Association (AWRA).
