Dangote to Build Own Stations

(January 11, 2006, as appeared in Africa Energy Intelligence )

The Dangote Group of Companies intends to construct two plants in Cross Rivers state, the first at Mfamosing near the Calabar industrial zone and the second at Etankpai.

The Mfamosing plant is slated to supply a cement plant that Dangote Group is building at Odukpani. Highly active in the sugar and flour businesses, Dangote already operates three cement plants as well; they are situated in the states of Benue, Kogi and Ogun. The group is equally involved in oil through Chrome Energy, leading shareholder in the small American firm EHRC/Chrome that is present on almost all of the existing oil concessions in the Joint Development Zone between Nigeria and Sao Tome.

Several private Nigerian companies are in the process of building their own power plants at the moment. The engineering firm Negris, headed by Abidoye Ayoola, is presently building a 30 MW plant in the industrial zone of Ikorodu in Lagos state. Elsewhere, Alliance Energy, a firm run by trader Akinwole Omoboriowo, recently teamed up with the American firm Black & Veatch to construct a 105 MW IPP at Illorin, capital of Kwara state.
