AWWA Seeks Information on State Regulatory Practices for Membranes(February 14, 2006, as appeared in Mainstream) AWWA has selected consultant WHB Environmental to execute a project entitled "Assessment of State Primacy Agency Regulatory Requirements for Low-Pressure Membrane Installations in Water Treatment Plants." The project will involve gathering information from state primacy agencies on current and anticipated regulatory practices of each state, relevant to microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membrane systems. Focus areas include permitting policies for full-scale facilities, pilot facility requirements, guidelines for granting log removal credits, and issues related to direct and indirect integrity testing of membrane modules. The project was approved by AWWA's Technical & Education Council and funding provided through the AWWA Communications & Marketing group's budget. The Water Science and Research Division's Membrane Technology Research Committee, chaired by Isabel Escobar of the University of Toledo, is spearheading the effort. Project committee members are Brent Alspach, Malcolm Pirnie; YuJung Chang, HDR; and Francis DiGiano, University of North Carolina―Chapel Hill; Lance Schiedeman, University of Illinois―Urbana-Champaign; Tai Tseng, Long Beach (Calif.) Water Department; and Vasu Veerapeneni, Black & Veatch. Judith Herschell and Miles Beamguard from WHB are assigned to the project. Elise Harrington is the AWWA staff liaison.
