Our sulfur experience encompasses both natural gas and petroleum refinery applications and includes engineering the upstream amine and sour water processes. This experience has resulted in projects covering the full range of acid gas compositions, sulfur recovery techniques, tail gas cleanup, sulfur degassing including our proprietary MAG® system, sulfur storage and solid sulfur forming technologies. We are very active in SO2 removal for flue gas desulfurization. Black & Veatch excels in conceptual process design, optimum selection and configuration, development of basic process design packages, and execution of full scope EPC services for new units and for revamping of existing facilities. We also offer complete commissioning/start-up assistance including operating support, training, and troubleshooting. Our first sulfur recovery plant based on Amoco Oil Company’s Claus technology was designed and constructed in 1953. Since then, Black & Veatch has been on the leading edge of developing improvements to the sulfur recovery processes of amine treating/regeneration, sour water management, Claus, and Tail Gas Cleanup Processes. These technologies have been applied to over 300 projects worldwide with plant capacities ranging from 0.5 long tons per day (ltpd) to 1,980 ltpd with single-train capacities up to 900 ltpd. Total sulfur production of Black & Veatch designed units exceeds 40,000 ltpd. For more information, contact us. |

Black & Veatch’s Gas, Oil & Chemicals (GOC) Division
is a world leader in the design and construction of sulfur recovery
units and related sulfur management facilities including gas/liquid
treating systems, sour water strippers, and flue gas desulfurization
units. Sulfur recovery has long been one of the company’s specialties,
resulting in many proprietary positions. Black & Veatch’s
design and construction experience covers the complete range of sulfur
recovery applications, including amine treating, sour water stripping,
and Claus plant tail gas treatments such as Amoco’s Cold Bed
Adsorption (CBA), ARCO’s Tail Gas Cleanup, and Shell’s
Claus Off-Gas Treating (SCOT). Black & Veatch also can offer proprietary
oxygen enrichment technology to gain additional capacity from existing
sulfur recovery units.
